Toonami Programming Block Returns To Adult Swim

"Attention Toonami Faithful - We heard you," went out the broadcast on multiple social networks, along with a URL: http://www.adultswim.com/shows/toonami/

That's right -- the long-missed Toonami programming block, part of the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network that broadcast action-oriented anime from 1997 through 2008 and helped allow anime to reach a wide segment of the U.S. viewing audience, is being reinstated as of May 26.

The whole resurrection of Toonami apparently started as either a prank or a good-natured testing of the waters for a new version of the block. On April Fools' Day 2012, a fake bumper for Toonami appeared on Adult Swim, followed by Twitter messages from the official Adult Swim account which read: "Want it back? Let us know. #BringBackToonami" The resulting tidal wave of support apparently helped Cartoon Network decide a new Toonami would be more than worth the effort.

No news yet on what shows will be broadcast through Toonami, but we should find out soon enough. The online Toonami Jetstream service, offering much of the same programming, also shut down a year after Toonami itself, but no word if that's coming back as well.

Among the shows syndicated through Toonami:

  • Cardcaptors (the English-dubbed reworking of Cardcaptor Sakura, which featured substantial changes to the storyline)
  • Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z
  • .hack//SIGN
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Sailor Moon
  • Tenchi Muyo!

Added 5/28: Here's a list of the first shows syndicated in the new Toonami:

  • 12:00 a.m. - Bleach
  • 12:30 a.m. - Deadman Wonderland
  • 1:00 a.m. - Casshern Sins
  • 1:30 a.m. - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • 2:00 a.m. - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG
  • 2:30 a.m. - Cowboy Bebop
