Prepare for yet another possible anime-to-live-action adaptation! Shotaro Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 (compare prices), originally a classic 1970s manga which later found its way to TV, has been picked up for a live-action production on this side of the Pacific.
According to the Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, Ishinomori Productions is looking to work with producer F.J. DeSanto (who previously gave us the live-action version of Will Eisner's The Spirit) to bring Cyborg 009 to the big screen as a live-action feature.
A whole slew of other Cyborg 009 material is also being prepped. DeSanto and Bradley Cramp (of Invertigo) are writing a story for a "Westernized"- graphic novel adaptation of the source, with Marcus To in the artist's chair and a tentative 2013 release date announced.
And yet another related project which I reported about last year is also in the works, albeit in Japan. Director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Moribito, Eden of the East) is working on a 3D animated production entitled 009 Re:Cyborg.
The original Cyborg 009 involved a shadowy organization named Black Ghost which transformed nine humans (hence the "009" of the title) into cyborgs to do their dirty work. But the nine turn against their erstwhile masters and instead set about keeping humanity safe from Black Ghost's future machinations. A 2001 remake of the series was released in English in a two-volume set under the Sony Pictures label, and some volumes of the manga were also published domestically by Tokyopop during their lifetime. All are believed to be out of print.
A very loosely-related anime series, 009-1 (which I personally liked quite a bit) was also created and found domestic release here thanks to FUNimation.
