Fantasy adventures take many forms, but they usually have a few dependable elements to make them, well, fantasy. Among them are The Hero and The Magical Artifact(s), two things -- among others -- that The Legend of the Legendary Heroes stands on their heads.
The Legend of the Legendary Heroes -- just typing that title puts a cockeyed smile on my face -- both fits into the usual fantasy/adventure mold and tries to escape that much more from it. Its hero is a layabout who'd rather spend his time getting caught up on his sleep than being heroic. His female sidekick -- well, she spends most of her time kicking him around. And the magic artifacts they're looking for may be nowhere nearly as dangerous as the very people they've trusted to help them in their search.
Based on a series of light novels that have sold over four million copies in Japan, Legendary Heroes now has its anime debut in English courtesy of FUNimation, over the course of two volumes on both Blu-ray and DVD. Read our review and see how well this attempt at a maverick approach to action fantasy holds up.
