A full list of Ishiguro's achievements and contributions reads like a rundown of almost every major seminal anime franchise of years past: the 1980s incarnation of Astro Boy, Space Battleship Yamato, Super Dimension Fortress Macross (the series that served as the basis for the English-language Robotech), and Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
He was active right up until the end, with his most recent directing effort being the 2008-9 anime series Tytania (derived from work by the creator of Galactic Heroes).
In 1978 he founded Artland, a production studio that's since contributed to a long and diverse roster of projects: Mushi-shi, Emma: A Victorian Romance, Eureka Seven, Fullmetal Alchemist, the Solid State Society installment for the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise, and many more.
Ishiguro was scheduled to appear at North Carolina's Animazement convention in May. He appeared at Otakon in 2011, discussing a forthcoming project of his named Angel ScandyS (about nine girls -- three angels, three devils and three humans) competing to become idols.
