We knew a live-action movie based on the classic anime series Rurouni Kenshin (compare prices) was on the way, and we've seen glimpses of it before. Now Yahoo! Japan has posted a good-quality full-length trailer (two minutes) that gives us a little more of an idea of the look and flavor of the movie.
The original anime and manga has become a staple among fans of both media, tracing the saga of a young assassin who attempts to redeem himself after Japan's opening to the West. He falls in with a young woman who's attempting to keep her beleaguered family dojo running, gains many new friends in the process ... and learns that many enemies from his own past are plotting to keep Japan's new future from being realized.
Despite not having any English subtitles, you probably won't need any to make sense of the trailer if you know the original story. Many familiar characters are here: Kenshin himself (of course), Kaoru, Megumi, Sanosuke, and a whole slew of enemies from the first arc of the series. There's also more glimpses of some gargantuan many-on-one battle sequences, again apparently inspired directly by the goings-on from the early chapters of the story. Less fitting is the high-energy rock soundtrack, which unfortunately seem obligatory for every movie made these days.
The cast includes Takeru Sato (MW, Goemon, the live-action Beck, and the Kamen Rider series) as Kenshin, Emi Takei (Liar Game) as Kaoru, and Yū Aoi (REDLINE) as Megumi. No English-language distribution has been announced for the film yet, but it's almost certainly a matter of time.
You can see the trailer here.
