You never get just one type of story with anime. Science-fiction action, blood-curdling horror, slice-of-life drama -- and three-hanky weepies as well. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day is the newest example of the latter, and the latest offering from the folks at NIS America as well.
The story's actually a mix of two genres: sentimental romance and supernatural fantasy. A high-school-aged kid discovers he's haunted by the spirit of a girl he knew when they were both much younger, and whose death precipitated the breakup of their local circle of friends. He's then motivated to get the old gang back together to figure out why she's here, and what she needs to find release from the bonds that tie her to this world. But it isn't as easy as just staging a farewell party or setting off one of her favorite fireworks (the "flower" of the title).
